CHANGELINGS by J.R.McRae
The
daycare children are all gone,
The post-work joggers run Half naked keeping pace With remnants of the peak hour traffic crawl. The lights are not yet lit And shoppers, in the main, have left To make way for the theatre, clubbing set. It is not nightfall yet - Other creatures have not woken, The half-light holds them check - Night birds don their fancy plumage – uncovering with care, Rats prepare to surge and scavenge, First pickings to the quick, Vermin creep from crannies and crawl away With all that’s left And somewhere The post care children sleep.
